The Square Foundation works with the universities who select students who are in need of support. 


In this way, we can use the collective resources of pharmacists around the world to support pharmacy education and help to improve health care in sub-Saharan Africa.


Health Care outcomes in the most of sub-Saharan Africa are poor compared to the rest of the world, partly due to the environmental conditions of the region and partly because of the fewer resources available.

Pharmacists are a key member of the health care team; often the first health care professional that a person sees.


The Square Foundation, supports pharmacy education through scholarships, donation of equipment and e-learning courses (The Square Academy). It encourages pharmacy students to complete their professional training and make a significant contribution to the health of the nation by:

  • Understanding how to use the knowledge and skills to benefit patients

  • Helping develop the judgement essential for a practicing health care professional

  • Access to pharmaceutical knowledge from around the world

WHO WE WORK WITH

LECTURERS

Course leader Dr. Robert Platt

The uniqueness of the Square Academy’s e-learning program is that undergraduates, post-graduates and health care professionals will have access to lecturers in different disciplines from around the world. The biographical details of each lecturer will be included in each lecture with a link to more information that can be provided on one slide.

The chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Square Academy e-learning program is Prof. Robert Platt, Professor in the departments of Pediatrics and of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health (EBOH) at McGill University. He is a Senior Investigator at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and the Lady Davis Institute of the Jewish General Hospital, and Investigator at the McGill Pharmacoepidemiology Research Unit, and he holds the Albert Boehringer I endowed chair in Pharmacoepidemiology.

The Scientific Advisory board will include experts in practice and research in a variety of fields related to pharmacy and medicine who will review each subject with focus on clinical pharmacy.

Senior Lecturer Dr. Sylvia Opanga

Dr. Sylvia Opanga is Clinical Pharmacist and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s School of Pharmacy. She holds a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Nairobi, and a fellowship in Implementation Science from the University of Washington, Seattle. She is a member of the Ministry of Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Technical Working Group. She also belongs to the Medicines Utilisation and Research Group in Africa (MURIA). She a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Kenya and founder assistant secretary for the Kenya Society for Basic and Applied Pharmacology. Currently she serves as the assistant treasurer for the Kenya Society for Basic and Applied Pharmacology. She is a recent winner of the Institut Mérieux Young Investigator Award. Sylvia is a founder member of the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (Africa Chapter) and is the East African regional Lead. She has contributed to the Pharmacoepidemiology module of the e-lecture program offered by the Square Academy. This program will enable medical and pharmacy students and to practicing pharmacists to benefit from practical information related to clinical pharmacy
